Tradition:  Sending Christmas Cards
How it started:  The tradition started in London, England in 1843.  It had become a lot cheaper to send things in the post office at that time, and Sir Henry Cole hired and illustrator to make cards to send to his friends and family.  He also sold them.  Things have changed a bit since then, but that's where the tradition started.

  3. Tradition: Fruit Cake
How it started: The tradition started with the british and romans in the 1700s. Dried fruits had just arrived from the Mediterranean for the british which sparked the idea to make Fruit Cake. The romans recently got a supply of cheap sugar and they learned how to contain it which also sparked the idea of Fruit Cake. People passed out the Fruit Cake and most people accepted even if they didn't like it because they didn't have the guts to say, "No Thank You". This is how the tradition of Fruit Cake started.

  4. Tradition: Christmas cookies and milk for Santa.
How it started: During the great depression many families told their kids to leave cookies and milk for Santa because they wanted to show their kids it’s nice to share with other people. This was just so they were trying to get out of the great depression and hoping if teaching there kids to share at a young age they would keep it with them forever.

How it started: Well very early in many countries many people believed that evrgreen and pine kept witches and evil spirits away.Germany is credited with starting the christmas tree tradtion. In the 16th century devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Around the 1890s christams ornaments started arriving from Germany and Christmas trees started to become more popular and more common. 6. Tradition: Drinking Eggnog
How it started: This drink started as a British tradition in 1775 and only the rich could afford it. It originally had alcohol in it to keep it from spoiling and to enhance the taste. Eggnog got it's name from two "slang" words. Back then the alcohol was referred to as snog. It was first called egg-n-snog but has evolved to the name we know today.

The earliest carol that can still be find but only little bits, it was in 1410, it was a carol about jesus and mary. Then there were people called waits, who are bunches of people taking money to sing carols, soon carols were requested more and more become a popular thing, so orchestras and choirs started to do there own too. Soon from there on and out carols became a common thing and there are some from the past that still exist.

They would leave their stockings out to dry, and St, Nick would leave them gold. The second story is children would leave their shoes out with hay in them. Why leave hay? They left hay for Santa's horses. Yes, they were horses. Santa gives the hay to his reindeer and leaves presents for the children in their shoes.

  70. Tradition:Why do we have christmas lights.
The first light up Christmas trees were lit with candles, but even before the age of Christmas light played a big part in ancient festivities that took place around this time of the year.the 18th century it became a popular tradition in many richer German homes to honor Christmas by decorating their Christmas trees with many small miniature candles. The candles were sometimes glued to the tree with melted wax and at other homes they were attached to the trees with pins.
After that they slowly decided lights would work better and boom that's why there is christmas lights.

  74. Tradition: Why do build Gingerbread Houses
How it started: In Germany an Armenian monk brought a sophisticated, religious bread mold and baked the bread batter. By the time of the 15th century it became associated with Christmas by the royal bakers that made religious icons that are in the Roman Catholic religion of Christianity. The Germans finally made the bread more sweet and human like in the 17th century. The house got inspired by the Grimm brothers tale, Hansel and Gretel when the witch lived in her house made of candy. Nowadays people think of it as a tradition and an art by the way they can make them, like by using more characters like Santa Claus, Elves, and Snowmen.
