Today we will take some time to explore the holiday of Halloween. You will create a list of things you are curious about and then research them. This is meant to be a fun assignment that you can complete in one class period. When you are done, comment on this blog with the most interesting thing you learned. You can also reply to others' comments.
My favorite thing I learned was how Halloween came to America

DeleteI found out that Apple Bobbing came from the pomona, which the apple represented. Pomona is the goddess of fruit and trees.

DeleteThe most interesting this that I learned about Halloween is that people once thought that November 1st was the new year, so they would dress up, and some people would go around and ask for money or food in exchange for things like prayers and songs on their behalf.

ReplyDeleteI learned the story about Stingy Jack. He was a man who made a deal with the devil so that he couldn't take his soul. He wasn't wanted in heaven though so he wandered the Earth with a burning coal in a turnup. That is the origin story for jack-o-lanterns.

DeleteWhat I found most interesting when learning about Halloween's history is the tradition the Celts had of making a massive bonfire, and sacrificing crops and animals to their deities on Samhain. Samhain being mainly what Halloween is based off of.

DeleteThe most interesting thing I found is that it is celebrating All Saints Eve (like christmas Eve), is celebrating Saints who are still alive you can celebrate by going to a church and attending a Mass (or a longer church service).
ReplyDeleteThe coolest that I learned is that the people thought that it was easiest for the spirits to travel on halloween because the ghosts travel on day of the dead in Mexico which is the week of halloween.
