Dust Bowl Stories

Reading
April 4, 2014

Today, we will listen to and read some first hand stories of people that lived during the Dust Bowl.  Start out by just checking out the stories they have to tell.  Then choose the three that are most interesting to you.  You're going to write a paragraph that summarizes their stories.  Before you write the paragraph, fill in the graphic organizer.  Then write the paragraph below.  If you would rather write this out on paper, you can just draw the chart and hand in the chart and your paragraph.

You can copy and paste your summary here, but you do not need to!

  1. There was a lot of amazingly terrible stories but I thought these were the most important.First of all is Harvey Pickrel. He was born 1916.He brought a tractor except the only problem is that he had to dig it out of the sand.He had a Brother and father and he helped raise the farm as a young boy and when he was older he would work on his own farm.Next is Stan Jensen. He was born on an isolated farmstead in South Dakota. No matter how hard he tried he could not keep his house dust free! This was a everyday dilemma for farmers and farmers wives because the dust was so strong that dust went through the towels they hung up(Houses were not that sturdy then). Finally is LeRoy Hankel. His problem was that his car was blown down the street 30 to 40 feet!He was raised on a farm but spoke german inside and outside the house. The guy was pretty smart because he saw a black cloud huddling over him and he heard a 100 mile wind and he stopped at Fraser and then he came out and saw his car going 30 to 40 miles down the street. In conclusion there were alot of lost things that could not be solved but these men used their minds and concuqured thoes problems and lived through them.
