Magazine Article Share

November 18 and 19

Today we will be reading articles from the magazines in the classroom.  Choose an article that you like, read it, and then write a short summary of it.  You will post this summary on the blog. It would be a good idea to do this on a Google Doc first.   Then take some time to read other's comments and reply to at least two.

Your summary should look like this:
Class Period: 6A
Magazine:  Discover
Issue:  December 2014
Article:  Ticket to Ride - Page 22
Summary:  Ticket to ride described three main private space explorations that are planned for the near future.  First, the Mars One program is getting ready to go to Mars.  They are getting money and volunteers right now to set up a colony on Mars. They will send a probe first, then a lander, and finally people.  They want to have people there by 2025.  They are going to pay for this by creating a reality TV show for us to watch on earth.  Second, the B612 Foundation is working to find asteroids.  This is run by two former astronauts, Rusty Schweickart and Ed Lu.  They are working on a plan to find and track asteroids that may do damage to earth.  Once they find them, they will alert NASA, and NASA would actually work on the solution. They want to just use donations and investments to do this.  They won't make any money.  Finally, the Golden Spike program is getting ready to send customers to the moon.  Most of these customers would be other countries that want to have a space program.  They will take care of all of the details, you just need to pay them about 1.5 billion dollars, and you will get a trip to the moon.  Mars One, B612 Foundation, and Golden Spike are three private businesses that are doing a job that only governments did before.

World War Two Research Projects

Week of November 10th

Our next project will involve completing research about some different aspects of World War 2.  We're doing this to both increase our skills and learn more about the topics you will find in several book club book choices.  Instead of creating a presentation, your final product will be a paragraph for this project.  To share our learning, you will write some of your most interesting facts as a blog entry here.

We will spend 3 class periods on this project.  Narrowing your topic will make this much more manageable.  I can help you with that.

Choose a general topic area and use the Google Doc to guide your research.  There are step by step directions there.  Your notes and your paragraph will be graded. The rubric is below. These will be SUMMATIVE grades.

Creating the Atomic Bomb
Heroes of the Holocaust
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Finding Nazis that Escaped at the end of the War
