Backyard Engineering - Posttest

Science

DO NOT take this until we do this in class.  Your classes will be doing this on different days, so make sure that you only take this posttest in class with me!

Do the best you can.  Remember, this test is more about how the game and lessons worked than it is about you.  It's still ok to say "I don't know" if you don't know.  However,  you will probably find that you are typing "I don't know" a lot less this time.

Wonder - Auggie - Precepts

Reading
May 28-30

Pages 275-288.  At the end of this section, Mr. Browne gives his precept assignment.  You are going to have one too.  Look at the list of all of the precepts from the year.  That list is on pages 311-312.    Chose the precept that means the most to you and write a summary of what the precept means.

Auggie's sample is on page 65.  Your summary should look something like that.  Don't copy his words though.  In fact, Your Deeds are Your Monuments is not one that you can write about.

In your comment, copy the precept, and then write your summary.  When you're done, reply to others' precepts.

Your initial post is due at the beginning of the hour on Friday, May 30th.

Wonder - Who is August Pullman?

Reading
May 19, 2014

We've just finished reading four different points of view in the novel Wonder.  The author lets us see many different voices so that we can get a better idea of what is really happening in the story.  Today's question is, Who is Auggie Pullman?  I want you to look back at each character's description of August.  Write down what they say or think about August.  Then write a summary that answers the question, who is August Pullman?

For this one, you won't use your opinion, you'll need to stick to the facts as they are presented in the book.

Who is August Pullman?

Wonder - Jack (The second half)

Reading
May 16, 2014

It's been a bit since you have had total freedom in your discussion.  Chose anything from this part of the book that you would like to discuss.  Make sure you explain it clearly so that everyone can understand what you want to discuss.  Then reply to others' comments.  If you want to do this while the thoughts are still fresh in your mind, do this when you get done with Jack's part of the story.    We will also have time for this on Monday.

Wonder - Summer

Reading
May 13, 2014

Mr. Browne's precept for October was, "Your Deeds are your Monuments."  One way we can think about this is the fact that people form opinions about us using our words and our actions.

In this section, we got to know Summer a lot better.  What do you think of her?  Chose one thing she said or one thing she did that helped you to know what kind of person she is.  Explain the words or action and then tell what you think of her.

Respond to others' comments.

Wonder - Via

Reading
May 9, 2014

Discuss Part Two

1.  R.J. Palacio chose to write this novel from multiple points of view.  How did the addition of Via's voice change the story?
2.  Tell your thoughts about Via.
3.  What did we learn about Treacher Collins Syndrome from the book?  What questions do you still have?

I think it will be easier to reply to each other's comments if you complete three different comments.  Then reply to each other's thoughts.

Genetic Abnormalities - When there is a problem with genes

Science
May 6, 2014

Why do some people get a genetic disease and others don't?  Today we're going to research this.  You're going to use all of those good reading techniques we practiced with the human genome project. You're going to start by reading some general information about genetic abnormalities to get a feel for how they happen in general.  It's under the link called General Info.   Then you are going to pick a specific abnormality and do more research.  The articles for those are linked separately.

When you are done reading, you need to share what you've learned.  For the abnormality you read,  make a comment on this post that tells us:
1.  What is it?
2.  What are the symptoms?
3.  How does a person get it?
4.  How is it treated?
5.  Can it be cured?

Wonder - The beginning

Reading
May 5-6, 2014

Your assignment was to read the beginning of Wonder, right up to the point where he starts his first day of school.  What do you want to discuss?  Is it a character?  An event?  A big question that you kept asking yourself?

Choose something from this section to discuss.  Describe it in a good amount of details so that everyone knows what you're talking about.  This way they will know how to reply to your thought.

Once you've finished that, reply to other's comments.

We will do this discussion in class on May 6th.  However, if you want to post your item for discussion today, do that.  I won't publish them until the 6th, but that way you can fill it out while the thoughts are fresh in your mind.
